Background
The National Department for Culture and Arts of Terengganu (Terengganu JKKN) is one of the branches of National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) as in other states. Before becoming a department in 2004, JKKN is a division under the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage which was known as Cultural and Arts Division. At the time, state branches were known as State Culture and Arts Office. For its branch in Terengganu, it was known as Terengganu State Culture and Arts Office.
Terengganu JKKN has its own unique building which is called Terengganu National Cultural Park Complex. The building is built on a land area of four
(4) acres which is situated on a relatively beautiful location at Kuala Ibai Lagoon, Kuala Terengganu. Terengganu Cultural Park Building is not only located close to the beach but it is surrounded by lagoons and adjacent to several state and private building complexes such as Sports Complex building, Equestrian, Floating Mosque and a 4-star hotel.
The Terengganu National Cultural Park Complex which is designed based on Terengganu Malay ethnic traditional architectural features commenced building in 2000 and completed fully and occupied in 2002. It accommodates the administrative office and operations of Terengganu JKKN that has sixteen (16) officer’s posts that is led by state culture and arts director.
Other than administrative and operations office that occupies the administrative block, the Terengganu National Cultural Park Complex also has a proscenium typed auditorium that can accommodate four hundred twenty two (422) audiences. Other than that, another block is the practice building that accommodates dance, music and acting studio.
As a branch of JKKN, the Terengganu JKKN is fully responsible to JKKN and KPK. The Terengganu State JKKN is an implementing agency at state level for programmes and activities specified by JKKN and KPK. Furthermore, the Terengganu State JKKN assists also in implementing cultural arts programmes and activities by the Terengganu State Government.
The main task and responsibility of Terengganu JKKN is to ensure that all activities under culture and arts development programmes as planned and specified by JKKN are fully implemented.
The development programmes consist of arts and culture promotion and enhancement activities, coaching and education of arts and culture, apprenticeship and research, conservation and supporting aids.
Today, the Terengganu JKKN is placed under KPK (Ministry Of Tourism And Culture Malaysia) agency.
- To implement research and development, documentation and publishing, cultural arts coaching, skilled human capital development in cultural arts field, expanding cultural arts, enhancing cultural arts, artistic and production development, and cultural arts promotional programmes;
- Building effective networking between cultural arts industry players, Government agencies, Private sectors, Non-Government Organizations and cultural arts activists locally and internationally;
- Providing platform for arts activists involved in economic field through cultural arts activities;
- Strengthening cultural and arts activities that are appropriate to become domestic and international tourist attractions; AND
- Optimizing States JKKN organizational functions.
