Background

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports was formed on 16 May 1964, after 23 years of operations, the ministry have experienced changes in portfolio and divided into two separate ministries, namely the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Malaysia and the Ministry of Youth and Sports on 20 May 1987.

Kedah Darul Aman State Cultural and Arts Office was established on 20 May 1987 and became the Northern Region Cultural Administrative Centre which covers Kedah, Perlis, and Penang.

The changes of portfolios in the Ministry have created some changes in Kedah Darul Aman State Cultural and Arts Office. Finally on 1 January 1996, the State Cultural Park known as Kedah Darul Aman State Cultural and Arts Office was established and located at Lot PTD 400, Pumpong, 05250 Alor Setar, Kedah Darul Aman.

The establishment of Kedah State Cultural Park was inspired by Johore State Cultural Arts Park and become a Centre for Cultural and Creative Arts which comprises children arts field, Theatre Arts, Dance Arts, Drawing Arts, Craft Arts and other arts along with intellectual activities in Kedah.

Now, the Kedah State Cultural Park is better known as the National Department for Culture and Arts, Kedah which places two (2) building blocks namely the Auditorium Block and Administrative Block. The facilities are open for use by government and private agencies as well as local Cultural NGOs as an approach towards preservation, exposure, development, enhancement, education and cultivation of culture and arts in Kedah. The infrastructure provided are Auditorium with sitting capacity of Two Hundred Sixty (260) persons, Open Stage, Meeting Room, Resource Centre including Art Galleries and other facilities.

  • To implement research and development, documentation and publishing, cultural arts coaching, skilled human capital development in cultural arts field, expanding cultural arts, enhancing cultural arts, artistic and production development, and cultural arts promotional programmes;
  • Building effective networking between cultural arts industry players, Government agencies, Private sectors, Non-Government Organizations and cultural arts activists locally and internationally;
  • Providing platform for arts activists involved in economic field through cultural arts activities;
  • Strengthening cultural and arts activities that are appropriate to become domestic and international tourist attractions; AND
  • Optimizing States JKKN organizational functions.
